In this article, we will talk mainly about the application for different types of bottom hole assembly (slick BHA drilling, Pendulum Assembly, & Packed BHA), its design & components. This article is a part of our drill string design guide. In general, there are three types of Bottom Hole Assembly BHA In drilling: The Slick …
The purpose of the drilling bottom hole assembly BHA is to drill a useful vertical hole with full gauge, smooth bore and free of doglegs and ledges. From the below drawing which shows the simplest bottom hole assembly (slick assembly) which consists of a bit and drill collars and no stabilizers, you will notice the following: …
Drilling jars are one of the BHA components that should be run with the drill string to help free stuck pipes. There are two common types of drilling jars: hydraulic and mechanical. Hydraulic jars use the pressure the string generates to apply an impact load. In contrast, the mechanical type uses a spring-loaded design to create an impact load. This …
A shock absorber sub or damper is a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and damp shock impulses while drilling. It does this by converting the kinetic energy of the shock into another form of energy (typically heat), which is then dissipated. Most shock absorber subs are a form of dashpot (a damper that …
Drilling reamer types serve different bottomhole-assembly (BHA) purposes: maintaining hole gauge, conditioning irregular sections or enlarging a pilot hole. The main equipment families include roller reamers, fixed-diameter hole openers and expandable underreamers. A near-bit reamer describes where the tool is positioned; RFID describes one method of commanding a downhole reamer. These terms are not five …
Drilling string stabilizer types & design is the main subject of this article. First, we will introduce to you the definition of a stabilizer. Then, we will move to the stabilizer application. Finally, we will talk about its types. This article is a part of the series explaining Bottom Hole Assembly Components, Types & Mechanism. …
The positive displacement mud motor uses the Moineau pump principle. However, Downhole mud motors in drilling have limitations. This tool has found wide application in directional drilling and even straight-hole drilling. Drilling mud motor diagrams # 1, 2, 3 & 4 show the basic design of a positive displacement motor. This article will cover the …
Motor selection is a function of the well requirements. This article will introduce the drilling mud motor selection for its specification. At the same time, the drilling engineer cannot make a proper selection without a full understanding of the drilling mud motor specifications and limitations. And we, of course, shall cover them all. In brief, …
There is only a small distance between slots on multi-well projects, mainly offshore. To eliminate the risk of collisions directly beneath the platform (platform rigs), a proposed well path is compared to existing and other proposed wells. The distances between other wells and the proposal are calculated frequently in the critical section. These anti-collision calculations …
This article aims to show the directional well trajectory calculation methods required for all well profile design planning, including build, hold, and drop sections, and to show the utilization of trajectory and directional survey calculation methods by designing the well path of two wells. Please note that this article is one of our Directional Drilling …
